Regarded as one of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera, Richard Tucker made his debut there as Alfredo Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata, in January, 1945, and became a specialist in the Italian and French lyric roles. He appeared with the Metropolitan Opera in 734 performances. The only other tenors to have had longer professional careers were Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Concurrently with his operatic career, Tucker, an Orthodox Jew, was regarded as one of the finest cantors ever, and his recordings of the cantorial repertoire are regarded as among the finest of their kind. The most successful American tenor ever to sing with the Met, and one of the greatest American tenors ever, Richard Tucker is honored with a portrait at the Met’s Founder’s Hall.
Sony Classical celebrates 100 years of this legendary American tenor with the release of two limited- edition original album releases. The ten-CD set, The Opera Recital Album Collection, features Tucker’s most memorable opera performances, including seven albums available for the first time on CD. The CDs are packaged in mini-sleeves, with their original album artwork and booklets, with new liner notes by the esteemed writer, Jürgen Kesting, who is best known for his three-volume study entitled Die großen Sänger (Great Singers).
